In Matilda Carlota, the audience is invited to sit as voyeur/paparazzi watching Matilda Carlota, an androgynous, pregnant entity, the archetype of the diva in decadence. The diva repeats a twisted tea ritual, preparing the room for guests who never arrive, and goes on singing in a lamenting way an old aria by Giacomelli composed for castrati, accompanied on the piano by her most loyal servant. Matilda Carlota is an opera-performance where decadence takes on a glamorous dimension, where the spectator looks into a room in the same meditative and somber state as one who looks into an aquarium.
